As the Modulari series increases in popularity, I thought it was time to share with you the idea behind it.
I have spent the last 15 years working as a professional artist and developing a painting technique that has become my signature style. I use heavy texture and multiple layers of paint wash and glazes (plus a few other secret ingredients) to create a sculptural artwork with a rich density of colour in combination with a more gentle watercolour finish. I then add irridescent mediums that add the light-reflecting quality and gives the pieces their chamelionic traits of changing in differing light sources.
Like many good ideas, the Modulari series concept came about accidentally.
Most of my style and work has been refined through experiments and development. This important part of my painting process was not feasible to do on the larger expensive canvases, so I began creating smaller versions of my works and ideas on 12" square canvases. I quickly realised that these works were too good to be considered experiemental and were mini masterpieces in their own right. They also looked incredible as a set or singular and in any combination, hence the name, Modulari. I then created an exhibition of these pieces which filled an entire wall of a gallery. Visitors were invited to re-arrange the pieces in any order they liked. It was incredibly engaging and inspiring.
